What can I use Shinnecock Kelp Farmer’s Kelp for?

The sugar kelp that Shinnecock Kelp Farmers cultivate is a type of seaweed that grows in the cold, shallow waters of Shinnecock Bay, and contains over 60 trace minerals and micronutrients.

These nutrients are essential for plant growth, and kelp meal also contains trace minerals, such as iron and manganese, which are important for the health of soils. Kelp is an environmentally friendly soil amendment that can help to improve the health of both gardens and farms.

Kelp can be used as a soil amendment in a few ways, including:

● New gardens: Mix 1–2 lbs of ground kelp per 100 sq ft of soil, and thoroughly mix it into the top 3 in.

● New transplants: Add 1–2 tsp of ground kelp per hole, mix into the soil, and water in well.

● Established plants: Side dress with 1–2 tsp of ground kelp per plant monthly during the growing season.

● Lawns: Broadcast 10 lbs of ground kelp per 1,000 sq ft in early spring.
